Plot Summary

The focus of this movie is on a man known as Mr. Anderson, a respectable computer program, by day, or as Neo, a notorious computer hacker, by night. He is the central character -- the artificial intelligence known as the matrix wants to nullify him, while those outside the system want him to be their leader.

The man known both as Mr. Anderson and Neo keeps his identities separate, until the day Morpheus contacted him directly via a phone, and the agents of the Matrix come to his office, searching for him. Although he wound up in the custody of the agents, Trinity, one of Morpheus followers, removed the "bug" the matrix implanted him with (which seriously shook Neo's grasp on "reality") And took him to see Morpheus.

One of the most obvious of all turning points of the story is when Neo decided to let Morpheus show him the truth about the matrix -- symbolically by choosing between a red pill of knowledge and a blue pill of ignorance. Neo wakes to his first taste of actual reality. A desolate place -- dark, gloomy, completely lacking sunshine and most forms of life.

After getting used to the "real world," Neo learns what happened to the world he though he knew, and how an artificial intelligence, known as the matrix, took control. He has also shown how the humans resisted the battle, and how they were now being grown as a power source to the machines. He also learned how to bend the rules of this artificial reality, such as moving faster than humanly possible, jumping tall buildings in a single bound, etc.

A visit to the oracle proved to be another key event in the movie. The children in the oracle's house bent the reality of the matrix, causing spoons to bend and wooden blocks to float in the air. Neo saw the flaws, and learned how to manipulate them by bending a spoon himself. The oracle told Neo that either he or Morpheus was going to die, and that he wasn't the chosen one -- at least, not in this life time.

Shortly after this, Cipher, a member of Morpheus's crew, turns on the group. All die except Tank, Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus himself -- but Morpheus's mind is still trapped inside the matrix. Neo then makes up his mind to save his friend, even if it costs him his life.

Another key event, or rather 2, took place on the roof of the building Morpheus was being held. Neo proved he could move just as fast as the agents could, by dodging bullets, and Trinity proved they could be killed, by shooting one in the head.

Upon nearly making a clean getaway from the agents of the matrix, Neo is left behind in the virtual reality world, and must battle an agent. Neo held his own for awhile, but not even a speeding subway could stop the agent. Neo tried to get away, but was still shot and "killed."

However, Neo wasn't really dead. His mind realized that the matrix was not real, and could not physically hurt him. He saw the matrix for what it really was -- nothing more than a computer algorithm. He tapped into this knowledge and became even more powerful than any agent there. He actually froze incoming bullets into the air, and destroyed the Agent.

Unfortunately, the minds of most people were not capable of leaving the virtual world, but they were no longer being suppressed by the matrix's control. Neo had managed to shut the system down. This was Neo's new life. He had lived once, died, and came back again. He truely was the chosen one.
